And you thought "Geek" was an insult
So, a few years ago (OK, more than a few) I used to hang out in the alt.tv.x-files USENET group. At some point during a discussion, a woman on the group by the name of Shanna Swendson used the term "Stealth Geek" to describe the character Fox Mulder. The response was almost explosive; in fact, thanks to Google Groups (a.k.a., the Archive Formerly Known as Deja), you can see the record of this pivotal historical event right here.
Anyway, it became quickly apparent that this was exactly the phrase that many people were searching for to describe either themselves or someone they knew. Simply defined, a Stealth Geek is a geek who has developed some social skills. Or, as Shanna put it, a Stealth Geek is a geek who you can look at and not immediately think "what a geek!". Mind you, this might come up after talking with them for a while, but by then you're at least talking to him or her, and therein lies the power of the Stealth Geek.
Eventually, Shanna decided that the designation had drawn enough interest to warrant a FAQ, so she wrote one. I hold the honor of being the first person to convert the Stealth Geek FAQ to HTML, but Shanna has since updated it and now hosts it on her own web site. So if you're a Stealth Geek, wonder whether you might be one, or (perhaps even more importantly) if you are related to or in a relationship with a Stealth Geek, I urge you to take a look:
